Faced with an unplanned pregnancy some patients utilize a Crisis Pregnancy Center because they encourage walk-ins, are free and claim to offer many services. In reality they only offer pregnancy tests, ultrasounds and pressure to continue a pregnancy.
These are not actual medical facilities and so THEY ARE NOT BOUND BY PATIENT PRIVACY LAWS! They can collect your information—name, age, address, gestational age from ultrasound, emergency contact, etc—and share it. An organization called Heartbeat International collects all this data—do we know what they do with it?
They offer ultrasounds but these are performed by non-medical, marginally trained staff. They are under NO LEGAL OBLIGATION TO TELL YOU THE TRUTH! Gestational age? Viability? They can make it up and often do.
They are not committed to helping you obtain real information or make the decision that’s best for you. I used to think that Crisis Pregnancy Centers were an insignificant waste of resources—the money would be better spent on counseling, birth control, housing, birth options, childcare. A movie—Preconceived—showed me how dangerous these facilities are. Their only mission is to prevent you from having an abortion, certainly not to help you once you have a baby to care for.
